About the prize winner

Eva Miranda

Professor Eva Miranda (UPC and CRM, Barcelona) has been awarded the inaugural Agnes Szanto Medal for her pioneering work at the interplay between Geometry, Dynamics and The Theory of Computation. She is an internationally distinguished mathematician whose groundbreaking research and exemplary service perfectly embody the spirit of this award.

Highlights of her remarkable research work include the proof that the Euler and the Navier-Stokes equations of fluid mechanics admit Turing complete steady states and undecidable stream lines (with R. Cardona and D. Peralta-Salas), the development of the theory of singular symplectic, Poisson and contact manifolds, introducing powerful tools such as normal forms, reduction, and desingularization (with several collaborators, including V. Guillemin, C. Oms and J. Weitsman), and the introduction of a new model of computation rooted in dynamics and topology, the so called Topological Kleene Field Theories (with A. González-Prieto and D. Peralta-Salas).

Miranda’s international recognition is exceptional. She was awarded the Francois Deruyts Prize (Royal Academy of Belgium, 2022) and the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Prize (Alexander von Humboldt Foundation). She received a Chaire d’Excellence from the Fondation Sciences Mathématiques de Paris in 2017. She was the 2023 Hardy Lecturer of the London Mathematical Society, 2025 Gauss Professor at Göttingen, and 2025 Nachdiplom Lecturer at ETH Zurich.

Morover, she is a true community builder: she founded the Laboratory of Geometry and Dynamical Systems (UPC) in 2016, leads the GEOMVAP group, and created and coordinates the SYMCREA Hub, creating lasting structures for collaboration at the interface of geometry, dynamics, and computation. She has trained a vibrant school of PhD students and postdoctoral fellows who are now advancing her research directions worldwide.

In summary, Prof. Miranda combines scientific creativity, computational vision, and community leadership to epitomize Agnes Szanto’s legacy.

The prize was awarded on July 13th, 2026, at FoCM'26 in Vienna, with an address at City Hall on July 14th.
